About the Act

The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006

The Act, commonly known as 'Forests Right Act" came into force with effect from 31.12.07. The Act seeks to recognize & vest the forest rights and occupation in forest land in forest dwelling Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers who have been residing in such forests for generations. While ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India is the nodal agency for implementation of the provision of this Act, the responsibility lies with the State Government to give effect to it. Two enabling Rules namely Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional forest dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights.) Rules, 2008 & Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional forest dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights), (Amended) Rules, 2012 have been formed to facilitate implementation of the provisions of the Act.
