Protected Areas in Odisha

  • The total protected area in the state is 8352.3 Sq.km which constitutes 5.36% of the total geographical area.
  • There are 19 Wildlife Sanctuaries covering an area of 8352.19 Sq. Km. in Odisha. Kapilas Wildlife Sanctuary in Dhenkanal District is the latest and was notified by Govt. of Odisha vide Notification No. 8F (WL)-25/11-5937/F&E dated 02.04.2011.
  • There is one National Park (Bhitarkanika Park over 145 Sq. Km.) and one proposed National Park (Similipal NP over 845.70 Sq. Km.)
  • 14 Elephant corridors have been identified in the State.
  • There are 2 Tiger Reserves in Odisha namely; Simlipal Tiger Reserve and Satkosia Tiger Reserve and one proposed Tiger Reserve in the State.
  • There are 3 Elephant Reserves in the State namely; Mayurbhanj ER, Mahanadi ER and Sambalpur ER. Besides these, more than two areas have been proposed for future elephant reserves in Odisha.
  • One Biosphere Reserve in the State for protection and conservation of Wildlife.
  • The state has one large zoo (Nandankanan), 2 small zoos and 8 mini zoos.

Conservation Outside Protected Areas: In addition to protected areas, efforts for conservation outside such area with the objective of enhancing biodiversity conservation outside the protected areas by supporting community based natural resource strategies with conservation have been taken up at Rushikulya River Mouth (an Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Nesting Site in Berhampur Forest Division) and at Bhetnoi- Balipadar (Blackbuck Protection Site) in Ghumsur {South) Division.
